Why Introductions Matter

Introductions set the tone for any interaction. Leaders and entrepreneurs often find themselves in situations where making a strong first impression is crucial. Mastering the art of introductions can pave the way for fruitful relationships. Your introductions should focus on answering the following 5 questions as succintly as possible; Who are you? What do you do? Who do you do it for? How long have you been doing that? Why should anyone care/pay attention now?

Whether you are meeting a potential client or networking at an event, your introduction can make or break the conversation and every other potential that may have been otherwise possible.

Here are five key scenarios where a well-crafted, personalised introduction is essential.

Networking Events

Networking events are prime opportunities to meet new people and establish fresh relations. When introducing yourself, be clear and concise. Mention your name, your role, and what you do. This helps others understand your background quickly.

For example, you might say, "Hi, I'm John Smith, a business coach with the BizzWizzards Consultancy, specializing in leadership development. Over the past decade we have been delivering effective leadership coaching and consulting services to the top 25% of the SMBs in Scotland so they can improve their success rates by over 80% cost effectively."

This gives the other person a snapshot of who you are, what you offer to whom and for how long. It also earns you credibility as you demonstrate quantifiable outcomes and processes that can later become conversation and follow up anchors.

Business Networking

Client Meetings

First impressions with clients are critical. When meeting a client, especially for the first time, start with a firm handshake and a confident introduction. Mention your name and the company you represent. Follow this with a brief appreciation for their time and an overview of how you can help them or the reason/value of the meeting.

For instance, "Hello, I'm Jane Doodles from ABC Business Services. We help businesses, like yours, improve their leadership skills and achieve their goals cost effectively. In the last 15 years, we have seen upward of 42% improvement annually across the business mix that leverage our systems and services with annual cost savings of between $10 000 and $100,000. Today, you too can begin the journey towards similar experiences and outcomes, if not better, for your business and team."

This sets a professional tone and opens the door for a deeper conversation that may lead to excellent relationships to build on.

Team Introductions

Introducing yourself, or your vision, to a new team is another important scenario. As a leader, you need to establish trust and rapport from the get-go. Start by sharing your background and your vision for the team.

Say something like, "Hi everyone, I'm Michelle Brown, your new Project Team Leader. With my 10 years of experience in project management, I'm excited to work with you all to achieve our ambitious targets. As we are the pioneers in this new AI & Innovation space, it is crucial that we work smart and cross funcitionally to set ourselves as industry leaders long into the future. I am confident in your unique attributes and very excited about this unique situation before us."

This helps team members understand your experience and hints at your leadership style, earning you that vital buy-in from them.

Public Speaking

When speaking at an event such press briefings or other such gatherings, your introduction sets the stage for your talk. Begin with a brief introduction of yourself and your qualifications. This helps the audience best connect with you.

For example, "Good morning everyone, thank you for taking the time to be here with us. I'm Sarah Johnson, the General Manager and Business Operations Lead here at BlackBean Consortium Ltd, with over 15 years of experience across various disciplines at senior management level. Today, I'll be sharing insights on effective team management, how that has shaped our progress thus far and our broader outlook as we look to grow into the future especially beyond the pain of the last pandemic. There will be a time slot at the end of my talk for your questions and feedback."

This establishes your credibility and prepares the audience for your presentation.

Social Media Introductions

Social media is another arena where introductions matter. Your bio on platforms like LinkedIn or Twitter should be concise and informative. Include your name, role, a clear profile picture of yourself and a brief description of what you do or are about.

For instance, "John Smith, Proven Business Advisor | Helping SaaS Startup Business Leaders achieve their full potential."

This makes it easy for people to understand who you are and what you offer, at a glance, leading to more meaningful connections.

social media

By tailoring your introduction to the various situations, you can make a strong first impression and set the stage for successful interactions, and more.

Remember, a good introduction is clear, concise, and relevant. Practice the above tips in different scenarios to build your confidence and make your introductions more impactful and unforgettable.

Bonus Tip: Think Smell, Sizzle and Sausage - When out and about, something gives clues about a barbeque in the distance, once close to where the sausage is being prepared by the fire, you hear/see the sizzle THEN finally you get the taste/first bite and the ensuing experiences with all the flavours. When you SHOW UP in any setting (that's the Smell) then you open your mouth and utter words/introduce yourself (that's the sizzle) then earn the right to proceed and present/take questions or state your claims/case (that's the whole Sausage).

Your introductions must be memorable and effective, earning you the right to experieince the very best wherever you show up.
